Role Recovery through Incentive Therapy

Mission: Incentive therapy (IT) positions provide on the job training and opportunity to regain confidence and build work skills. In conjunction with psychosocial rehabilitation principles, consumers are an integral part of a recovery-oriented mental health system. In addition, Community Transitions Center (CTC) is dedicated to promoting meaningful roles for consumers, who then become role models for other veterans working to achieve recovery from a serious mental illness.

Learning Objectives:

Student will…

  • Apply for the job; completing required paperwork for both CTC and IT.
  • Participate in an interview.
  • Identify three (3) personal learning objectives related to the job.
  • Develop the necessary skills: reliable, responsible, good attendance, communication, and neat presentation.
  • Learn and carry out the job functions (as described in the position description).
  • Learn classroom and community-based interpersonal facilitation skills.
  • Expand personal knowledge of community resources.
  • Develop understanding of the boundaries between student and work role.
  • Learn how to exit a job in the standard manner.

Expectations

  • Wear your photo ID when you are on the job at the VA.
  • Meet bi-weekly for supervision to get feedback on job performance.
  • Seek out consultation from supervisor when job-related problems arise.
  • You will learn and be expected to practice “doing with” rather than “doing for” those you are assisting.
  • Obtain your own CA ID card, transit discount card, and a library card.
  • As an Incentive Therapy participant, you are a role model of recovery-focused behavior.
  • Be responsible for tracking and faxing completed IT paperwork per schedule.

Procedures

  1. Complete application process with CTC, including interview.
  2. Contact IT staff at x65936 for an appointment to complete IT paperwork, which is done at PAD, Bldg. 7, Rm B112.
  3. Set up a consistent work schedule with supervisor.
  4. Meet bi-weekly with supervisor to consult regarding job-related problems, review job performance, and to complete IT time card.
  5. Participant will be expected to follow standard procedures of notifying supervisor regarding absences (time off/illness).and to give two weeks notice prior to IT completion.

Hours and Length of Service

  • Veteran can work up to 20 hours per week, 10 days of planned leave per year.
  • This Incentive Therapy Program CTC position may be no more than one year.

Incentive Therapy Position Description:

Community Coach

  • Co-facilitate Community Transitions Center community goals or community connections class.
  • Assist CTC students in planning and using interpersonal communication skills on community excursions for business or recreation.
  • Give individual assistance to CTC students in seeking information needed for planning a community trip.
  • Teach CTC students to gather information related to their recovery goals via the computer or telephone.
  • Accompany CTC students on community excursions that require use of public transportation to provide support and assistance with problem solving.

Such as applying for a discount transit card, going to self help centers, local libraries, vocational programs, and community colleges.

  • Update CTC “Community Activities” bulletin board on a monthly basis to ensure that current events are posted.
